Hi! Thanks so much for visiting. My name is Benjamin Hoppe. I’m a songwriter, producer, and music instructor from a small town called Belleville (“beautiful city”). Our fine metropolis is pinched between Ann Arbor and the Motor City, and wrapped around Interstate 94 like Barney Fife on a zip line. Belleville is also home of the National Strawberry Festival. (I don’t know what the rules are for claiming to be home of the National anything, but I’m convinced we may have circumvented a few.) I’m sure everyone probably feels like their hometown is ideally positioned, but Belleville is a pretty idyllic blend of corn fields and convenience.
I got all my book learnin’ in music performance and songwriting at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, MI and the Contemporary Music Center in Nashville, TN. I learned production on a home studio that could fit comfortably in a bathtub. Huzzah for self-betterment. Of the three establishments, the tub-studio offered the best tuition rates.
I’ve been teaching private music lessons ever since a few trusting church friends laid bets on the reserved, thirteen-year-old version of me, with my hand-me-down guitar and outrageously low prices. Today, I teach guitar (classical, acoustic, electric), bass, piano, drums, theory, etc…most of the instruments that don’t involve making raspberries into some kind of pipe.
As a kid, I was clean-cut, churched, and smiley; it was a generally squeaky exterior. I guess it’s hard to look at a sprout and know preemptively if it’ll produce prickles or peaches. But as a young teen, I came to the realization that I actually neededJesus. That brought authentic change on the inside.
That realization - and that change - inform everything I do, including music. One of my passions is worship ministry and writing songs for the gathered church. I want Christians to respond to the gospel of Jesus authentically, using music as a vehicle. Over the years, I’ve done worship ministry in school settings, concerts, and in the local church.
I’ve also interned with (and written for) Sovereign Grace Music in Louisville, KY (sovereigngracemusic.org). In an effort to be a big-wig entrepreneur, I just launched my own online, video-based music training site...skip on over to LessonTank.com to get more on that. In the production department, I produced this rad EP for singer/songwriter Joy Rode. More projects in the works! Writing, production, music ministry, performance, and education…I suppose I’ve taken the salad bar approach to music. And so far, it's cool. God has been faithful.
Thanks for perusing my meandering memoir. Don’t forget to make me feel spesh by subscribing.
